Irvin High School Hosts Community Engagement Event with Northeast Coalition

More than 100 families packed the Irvin High School gymnasium floor to learn more about community organizations that support families in Northeast El Paso. As part of their Spirit Night, 15 organizations associated with the Northeast Coalition handed out information and spoke with parents about their programs and services offered.

The Irvin High School Band, Rocket Cheerleaders, and Rocket Step Team provided background entertainment while the families developed new connections and learned more about community service providers.

“I had no idea that some of these organizations existed, let alone worked with people in my neighborhood” stated Merisol Hernandez, parent of an Irvin 9th grader.

With a focus on strong communities, the Northeast Coalition is working to bridge the gap between schools and the neighborhoods in which they operate. FACES is designed to do just that. By linking Spirit Night, an Irvin event, with FACES, we are bringing the supportive community into the school, directly linking them to students and parents.

At the end of the night, parents were engaged, organizations distributed their information, and connections were made. Previous FACES events have been held in Schuster Elementary, and in the Segundo Barrio. Andress High School will host their FACES night on Thursday, October 4th from 6-8 pm.

“We are working with several other schools to host FACES events and look forward to making connections in those neighborhoods.” said Gail Gale, Northeast Coalition organizer and Education Specialist for the United Way of El Paso County. “It is this type of community engagement that is providing our community’s youth the support they need to graduate.”
