Remediation Projects Manager Allen Hains made a unique proposal to his coworkers. He set down a challenge that if employees surpassed their previous year’s contribution to United Way of El Paso County he would shave his signature mustache – the one that he has had since 1978.
Western Refining employees were up to the task and exceeded the total by 31 percent.
“You bet your mustache and you lost,” Hains said his co-workers told him. But he always replied “No, I made a bet and I won.”
The move follows in the footsteps of Victor Nevarez, Director of Commercial Logistics for Western Refining and current Board Chairman for United Way of El Paso County. Several years ago Nevarez agreed to cut off his pony tail should the company reach their goal. That campaign was a success and Nevarez’s hairstyle remains short to this day.
