United Way Receives Grant to bring Parents as Teachers Program to El Paso

El Paso, TX (August 4, 2014) – United Way of El Paso County (UWEPC) has received grant funding from the OneStar Foundation to begin a new Parents as Teachers (PAT)  AmeriCorps Program in El Paso County.  PAT is an evidence-based early childhood home visitation framework that builds strong communities, thriving families and children who are healthy, safe, and ready to learn.

Based on the well-established philosophy that all parents are their child’s first teacher, the program will focus on parenting issues and child development. This AmeriCorps PAT Program will serve more than 400 families in El Paso County and will include personalized home visits, regular screenings for children, group sessions, support for the families, and community resources.

“The Parents as Teachers program engages families and encourages a greater understanding of child development by teaching skills and connecting them to the resources needed to make the best choices for their families,” said Steve Busser, United Way of El Paso County Board Chair, “the PAT program helps shape a child’s futures by providing experiences that prepare them for a lifetime of learning.”

The PAT Program will be delivered by 20 AmeriCorps members in hosted sites throughout the community.  Hosted sites include, Armed Services YMCA, Paso del Norte Children’s Development Center, Project Vida, Region 19 Head Start, YMCA of El Paso, and Ysleta del Sur Pueblo.

UWEPC is currently recruiting for the 20 full time AmeriCorps member positions.  AmeriCorps is a “domestic peace corps” national service movement that engages individuals of all ages and backgrounds.  At the end of the AmeriCorps member’s service term, members earn an AmeriCorps Education Award which they may use to pay for college, or to pay back qualified student loans.  Additionally, AmeriCorps members receive health benefits, student loan deferments, and a living allowance to offset food and housing costs during their term of service.
