Families can still enroll in “Parents as Teachers” program

Last year, United Way of El Paso County (UWEPC) launched the Parents as Teachers (PAT) program which empowers and educates parents of infants and children 5 years or younger.

The program engages families in an evidence-based early childhood visitation program. With the philosophy that all parents are their child’s first educator, the program works to increase their knowledge of early childhood development and parenting.

The UWEPC provides PAT through the Project Healthy Outcomes through Prevention & Early Support (HOPES) integrated system that includes local agencies such as Avance, Paso del Norte Children’s Development Center and Child Crisis Center. Those agencies provide complimentary services. The AmeriCorps via UWEPC also provides access to PAT along with local organizations such as the YMCA, YWCA, Project Vida, Paso del Norte Children’s Development Center and Ysleta del Sur Pueblo.

Aiding each family is a PAT Parent Educator who provides support for the parent and child as they develop to realize their full potential. The goal of the program is to build a framework that builds strong communities with children who are healthy, safe and ready to learn.

PAT Outcomes:
Increased knowledge of early child development and parenting practices
Early detection of developmental delays and health issues
Increased child’s school readiness and success

PAT Incentives:
Personalized home visits
Regular screenings for the child
Community resource network
Group connections to other parents
